Janet Kirkman Bridal Alterations

The wedding dress was two sizes two big as I went on a diet to look great for the wedding but that was no problem for Janet. She even worked on a tuxedo for our Golden Retriever and he looked so handsome as well. She had a great professionalism and was flexible with my time. Thanks Janet for all you did for me as well as matron of honor's dress which was not quite what she wanted. The day was perfect.

I bought my dress from Almond Tree, so it was used and definitely needed some alterations. Janet fitted the beaded corset, fixed all the beading all over the dress, hemmed the crinoline petticoat, created a french bustle, and created (from scratch) cap sleeves (for modesty in the church). Her prices were absolutely outstanding...I expected to pay twice as much as I did! She is so sweet to work with, too. I brought a gaggle of people to my first fitting and she was so patient with all their demands to see different things. I felt like an absolute princess in my dress, thanks to Janet, and I definitely plan to use her again in the future for bridesmaids dresses!

I bought a $7000 designer dress, and before I was able to get alterations from the designer, the designer closed all locations and went bankrupt. I was terrified of bringing my dress to someone else because I wasn't sure they would take as much care with my dress as I felt it needed. My mom finally found Janet for me online and we called. She sounded very professional, so we decided to give her a try. When I went in for my fitting, the dress fit, but Janet made a suggestion to help me pin my train up for the reception. She showed me a ton of different ways to do it, and told me she would sew a button in so that it was possible and I didn't need to buy a "reception dress" too. She also offered to sew my corset into the dress so that everything would stay in place. I got this done, and I'm so happy that I did. Janet steam cleaned my dress and veil and kept them safe and clean for me until the day of the wedding. She did everything and more. I am really glad I went to her for my alterations.

I can't thank Janet enough for creating the wedding dress of my dreams! Janet was able to take my dress which I thought was perfect and make it even better for my body. Oh, Janet Kirkman, you genius. I went into Janet a little over 2 months before my wedding to have some serious alterations done on my dress. What I got was something that fit better than I could have possibly imagined. On my first visit she told me she had been a mechanical engineer and worked on fighter jets. Awesome. A mechanical engineer working on a structured dress. Seriously, what more could you ask for? Anyway, she took measurements on the dress and showed me how it could fit with a few pins and extended boning. She also created this amazing modified American bustle that was simply cool. It gave the back of my dress a really amazing shape and served it's purpose fully. My second visit was breathtaking. She had manipulated that gown to fit like a glove and it wasn't terribly uncomfortable either. We only had to make one more adjustment (extending the boning in the bodice a little more to avoid any pooches) and perfect. One of my bridesmaids picked it up on the day of the wedding and I wanted to melt when I finally put it on. Janet was always very honest when I asked about things and never pressured me to buy any of the accessories in her shop (many were gorgeous, just not my style). If you need someone who knows their way around structure and style, this is your woman!

I took my wedding dress to her after spending $150 in alterations at another Phoenix shop. The woman who had initially worked on my dress left it with an uneven hem, a bustle that dragged on the floor, and poorly-fitting, lumpy bodice. I am so glad that I gave Janet a call! She is a warm, confident, and incredibly competent bridal alterationist. Not only did she fix every aspect of my dress with which I had been unhappy, for each "problem area," she presented several possible solutions and let me decide which I felt would be most ideal. She knows and excels at her craft and clearly loves what she does. The front of her house is designed as a bridal shop, and, I kid you not, you will feel as though you have walked into an upscale bridal boutique. Her workmanship is top notch. I was charged a grand total of $90 for the following work: scalloped lace hem brought up on one side of the dress, boning extended throughout bodice (to reduce the appearance of some odd bumps in the corset that emerged after I took my dress to the first shop), bodice taken in on sides, fabric at neckline tapered so that the dress fell flush against my skin, bustle taken up, underlining of skirt tacked to outer lace, swatch of lace from my mother's wedding dress sewn into lining, dress professionally steamed. I just wanted to share the incredibly positive experience I had with Janet with other future brides!

Janet was fantastic to work with! She is definitely an expert in her skill and she was flexible to let me come back as many times as I wanted until I got it right! I liked my dress when I first got it, but I didn't love it until Janet worked her magic and made it to fit my body perfectly! I would highly recommend her for any bridal dress alterations or re-designs!

Janet Kirkman is not simply a seamstress, she truly is an artist in every sense of the word. She took my mermaid style strapless lace dress and turned it into an a-line vision with beautiful hand beaded straps. She added crinoline to make the skirt fuller and added a french bustle for the reception. Being a plus size bride, there weren't as many dress options for me to choose from so I bought what was most like what I wanted and then Janet made it the dress of my dreams. She really makes your dress "yours" and I could not be happier with the end result. Her prices are also VERY affordable for all that she does. I was expecting to pay at least half of what I paid for my dress for all I wanted done and it was just a small fraction of that. And this included HAND BEADING!! I'm really partial to the straps and love looking at them! :) My mom came with me each time I went for a fitting. I don't know if it was more to see me or to shop and look at all the accessories and extras that Janet has for sale as well! I bought a gorgeous lace garter from her and my mom bought an evening bag. Also, Janet runs her business out of her house. I really liked this because it provides such a more intimate and personal environment. I wasn't having to trot out into a busy overcrowded room with my bra hanging out in front of everyone. Janet is one of the nicest people I have ever met and she goes out of her way to make you happy and feel like your best on your special day. I would recommend to anyone and everyone because I don't think you will find a higher quality of work anywhere. Thank you Janet!

Janet Kirkman did the alterations for my wedding dress and my mom's dress. I just adore her. I was a bit worried about finding someone to do my alterations because my dress was large, with a corset top, a large skirt with pick-ups, and a ton of beading. Janet did an absolutely perfect job on the alterations. My dress fit me beautifully and I was much more comfortable in it than before I had her alter it. She was so reasonably priced, too. I was expecting the alterations to cost a lot more than they did. Janet is just amazing and I would recommend her to anyone!

I cannot say enough about Janet Kirkman! She made my dress fit like a glove. She was sweet and professional. Her work is amazing and she was very reasonably priced. She includes steaming in her prices. I really enjoyed working with her and would highly recommend her!

Janet is absolutely AMAZING! She made sure my dress fit me just the way I wanted it to, and was great about answering all my questions about hems and bustles. When I decided that the slip I had didn’t work quite right with my dress, Janet sewed one right into the skirt so it lay just perfectly! I would send any bride to her in a heartbeat.

While Janet is super friendly, the only thing that stressed me on my wedding day was my dress. I had two major issues. The first was the fit. I questioned how tight the dress was and she assured me it was suppose to be as tight as it was and that it would loosen...well, the dress did not loosen and it was extremely uncomfortable. I trusted her expertise. The part that upsets me the most is the dress looks too tight in my photos. From the back it is obviously too tight. Trust your instinct. While the fit could be blamed on me trusting her opinion, the second issue was purely a result of a poorly done job. The bustle on my dress broke within 15 minutes of being bustled. I had a french 3 point bustle and two of the 3 points pulled out due to the weight of the dress. The had very skinny ribbon poorly reinforced to hold the weight of my dress. Anyone with experience in bustling dresses should have known better.

Grade: A+ It was super easy working with Janet! She worked around my schedule and made the process a breeze! Great work and reasonable prices! I am so glad I didn’t even consider going anywhere else! Janet made the alterations process low stress!

Janet did a beautiful job on my dress. She works out of her home so it's a very personalized experience. The alterations and bustle came out perfect. My dress fit me perfectly. My dress was originally a bit poofy, so Janet advised me to cut a petticoat out and I'm so glad I listened to her recommendations! The bustle was very intricate and stayed intact throughout my wedding festivities. I spent a few hundred dollars but it was well worth it!

I had made an appointment with Janet months in advance since I was an out of town bride and only had one week for the gown to be altered. Two weeks before my appointment, she cancelled because she was traveling. I have a hard time believing that she didn't know that she was traveling with more notice. She was also not very nice or compassionate when she made the cancellation phone call. I had to find someone last minute and it made the couple weeks before my wedding much more stressful.

Janet did a fantastic job altering my wedding dress. My dress had a lot of intricate bead work that I was terrified of ruining and Janet handled it perfectly. My dress fit like a glove and was done in a timely manner. Janet stored my dress for me up until right before my wedding and she pressed it right before I picked it up. Janet also custom made a veil to match my dress; it was beautiful. Janet was easy to work with and very professional; I would definitely recommend her to a friend!
